Safety and Security Assessments

Organization Assessment  

• Effectiveness of current structure of the campus safety organization (police force, security force, contracted security, or combination) in providing a safe and secure campus

• Engagement of the campus safety organization with the campus community  

• Resources available to the campus safety organization to perform its responsibilities

• Institutional policies and procedures that support and/or impede the effective operations of the campus safety organization 

• Relationships with external law enforcement agencies

Threat Assessment 

• Process by which potential threats are identified, analyzed, and managed 

• Engagement of appropriate campus entities engaged in in the threat assessment process

• Campus entities appropriately trained in the elements of risk and threat assessment  

• Effectiveness in identifying potential threats, assessing vulnerabilities, and developing mitigation strategies

• Consistency of policies, procedures, and actions taken in identifying, analyzing, and managing potential threats

Safety and Security Risk Assessment and Review 

• Methods utilized by the institution to address campus safety and security

• Review of institutional policies, procedures, and practices regarding campus safety and security  

• Consistency of policies, procedures, and practices

• Methods for informing the campus to stay safe in an emergency as well as general campus safety information

• Compliance with federal and state laws regarding security and safety

• Utilization of safety audits and emergency safety drills

• Physical improvements to the campus to address safety and security

Special Event Risk Assessment 

• Institutional processes to assess the risks for special events such as athletic events, concerts,commencement ceremonies, speakers, rallies, parades, large student organization events, etc.

• Campus policies and procedures that address special events

• Structure and operation of entity identified to assess special events risks 

• Relationship between entity charged with assessing special events risks and senior leadership, police/security agencies, athletics, facilities, parking and other campus and community agencies.

• History of assessing, mitigating and managing risks with special events
